First World Problemos
I wake up. Its 9’oclock in the morning and I have to go and get
ready for church. Every Sunday me and my family head down and take blessing from
our God. Before we leave, we all get ready by dressing up well for church. My
dad would wear his polo shirt and his khaki pants and my mom would wear a dress.
Usually, I wear a pair of jeans and wear one of my favorite shirts. Today
however I questioned the status quo and after I took a refreshing hot shower, I
wore some worn out shorts and a gigantic comfortable white shirt.
As I walked down the stairs to wait to leave, my mom catches me
and calls me out on what I’m wearing. She says “Jerry, you go back upstairs
right now and change what you’re wearing.”
I look back at her and ask her “why must I change, won’t Jesus
accept me no matter what I wear”?
She glares at me and says “you must dress nicely for the Lord,
and not take Him for granted; you need to learn to respect and give him all
you’ve got, so go up to your room and change those
rags”.
I obey her orders and change.
That night after a long day out since my pop wanted to keep us
out dressing well, I come home and watch some television. As I watched closely I
could recognize all the actors, actresses, commercial people look their best to
play the part.
One actor named Larry would talk to John and go about their
daily lives looking really over the top and I thought that it was pretty
ridiculous. When I watched the actresses on tv, they had make up inside their
own homes! It was preposterous! I enjoyed the shows no matter what
though.
The next morning, I wake up and get ready for school at around
6’oclock. I dress up nicely with my jeans and pursue the day ahead of me. You
know the daily routine.
I arrive to school and look around and I see everyone around me
dressed really nicely as well just for school! I find my best friend Mac and ask
him “Why is everyone here, all dressed up so well like actors and actresses on
tv”?
Mac asks me “what do you mean? They all dress fine to
me.”
I look at him and tell him “Well, you know, why don’t we dress
up in more comfortable clothing for school, why do we dress up so
much”?
Mac speaks back in a confused kind of way and tells me “Well, we
want to impress others around us and look good don’t
we”?
I told him “I guess so”. Then I just walked to class.
We get to lunch that day and again I notice that everyone around
us is dressed up all fancy compared to how we would dress up at home; even the
teachers with their suits and all.
I go to the lunch table and talk to Mac and my other friend
Nana. I ask them once again “Why do we put so much effort into dressing up,
shouldn’t we focus more on our school
learning”?
Nana replies first and asks “What’s this all
about”?
Mac explains to her how I was acting weird all day about looks
he then says “Well look, Jerry, we need to try our best to make our looks great
so that we project a positive reputation”.
I ask “Why do we care about our reputation so much”. It just
seems so ridiculous that we care a bunch about how we look when we can be
focusing more on getting a better education.
Mac gave up on me and says “Well you’re being pretty obnoxious;
I give up trying to explain looks to you”.
Nana speaks after being quiet for a while and she proclaims “at
least we have an education! People around the world struggle to even get to
school”.
I tell her “true, but why looks? Why does it matter so
much”?
She slowly says “we need to look our best and take pride in
going to school and everything we do; we take things for granted and end up
forgetting how important the things we have are. We need to reflect our best for
society and actually care about how we portray ourselves”.
After that long dreadful day of school, I get back home and get
on the computer. The first thing I see on the internet was a video about how
women in Afghanistan risk their lives just to
get to their class for the day. As I watched the video I noticed
how they didn’t dress up too well but still tried their best to go to
school.
It was in that moment I understood what Nana said and that maybe
those women in Afghanistan actually did try their best to look good with what
they had and took pride in their freedom of going to school. I thought about it
even more and realized that it was actually a luxury to be also able to go to
church and have a Savior who loves us so dearly. I prayed that night and thanked
God for all he has given me for without Him I would have nothing to even worry
about. To this day, I’ve dressed up nicely no matter where I went and it shall
always be like so.
